Fianna Fáil's John O'Donoghue was philosophical after failing to secure a seat in Kerry South, saying he had "fought a good fight for Fianna Fáil".

The former Minister resigned as Ceann Chomhairle of the Dáil last year in the wake of controversy over lavish expenses claims. He says he has no regrets and has not ruled out running for a Dáil seat again.

"I wanted to fight a good fight for Fianna Fáil. I'm not the kind of person who would jump ship," he said. "I would far prefer to go down with it, and down with it I went."
