A Nigerian man has been convicted of raping a young woman in a Dublin apartment after a night out almost two years ago.

John Noghayin (aged 29) of Cabra Park, Dublin 7, had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping and sexually assaulting the woman at a Dublin address on May 3, 2009.

He claimed in evidence that he and the victim were “just playing” and lying on top of each other “for a laugh”. He denied touching her private parts or raping her.

Noghayin rejected a suggestion by Mr Gerard Clarke SC, prosecuting, that the evidence he gave about being able to “play” with himself until he ejaculated, without the woman knowing, was nonsense.

He denied under cross-examination that he raped the girl, said he did not know how his semen got on her vaginal area or how she got bruises on her arms.

The jury of six men and six women took almost four hours to return the verdict on day five of the trial.

Mr Justice Barry White thanked the jurors for their care and consideration in the case, excused them from further duty for five years and remanded Noghayin in custody pending sentence on March 14.

Judge White declared Noghayin a sex offender and ordered the preparation of a victim impact statement for the sentence hearing.
