Receiver appointed to Sunday Tribune

A receiver has been appointed to the Sunday Tribune newspaper, it was confirmed today.

Staff at the weekly paper were told of the development at a meeting this afternoon.

Independent News and Media - which owns 29.9% of Tribune Newspapers - said that ongoing funding for the Tribune is no longer viable, but it has committed enough money to pay staff until the end of the month.

The receiver is to assess the prospects for the paper as a going concern.

The Sunday Tribune employs 43 staff.

The newspaper's chief sportswriter, Malachy Clerkin has tweeted: "Sunday Tribune has gone into receivership. We're not closed yet so no need for premature obituaries. Hope lives."
