An elderly woman has been killed in a road accident in Co Roscommon today.

An elderly woman has been killed in a road accident in Co Roscommon today.

The 83-year-old was travelling in a car with her 86-year-old brother when the vehicle and an articulated lorry were in collision on the Strokestown to Elphin Road at the townland of Lugboy.

Gardaí from Boyle garda station are investigating the crash which happened at 1pm this afternoon.

The man and woman were taken to Roscommon General Hospital where the woman died this evening.

The man has been transferred to University College Hospital Galway with serious injuries.

The road at the scene has re-opened to traffic following an examination of the area.

Garda are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
