A viable explosive device has been left near an Army centre in Belfast.

The object was found at the Queen’s University Officer Training Corps on the Malone Road.

It was made safe by Army bomb disposal officers and taken away for examination.

The alert caused serious traffic disruption in the busy south of the city.

SDLP Assembly member Conall McDevitt said the actions of whoever left the device were reprehensible.

“Two of Belfast’s busiest routes have been brought to a virtual standstill, preventing parents collecting children from school and hindering business in our community,” he said.

“The perpetrators must realise that this type of politics failed in the past and will fail again.”
