A murder inquiry has been officially launched in Cork after the remains of a man were recovered from a flat in Youghal.

31-year-old Michael O'Shea - who was from the town - was found dead at his North Main Street flat following a fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He is understood to have died from a neck injury which was not consistent with having being sustained in a fire.

Initial examinations confirmed that he had suffered a violent death before the fire took hold.
