Gardaí advise motorists to slow down due to black ice

Motorists are being advised to drive with care this morning as a widespread sharp to severe ground frost has led to icy stretches on untreated roads.

Gardaí said the N18 between Limerick and Ennis is particularly treachorous with extended stretches of black ice.

A number of roads have been closed as a result.

The counties worst affected by overnight snow include Roscommon, Clare, Cork, Limerick and Kerry.

Further snow will fall again today, moving east across the country, but the cold snap is not likely to last past the weekend.

Air passengers are facing disruption in Scotland after Edinburgh Airport was forced to shut due to snowy weather.

Up to 10 centimetres of snow settled in places overnight, with more expected throughout the day.

The airport's operator BAA said it will be closed until midday.
