First stage of Social Welfare Bill passes

The first vote to implement cuts on child benefit and welfare payments has passed in the Dáil by 76 votes to 72 this afternoon.

The Governmen is rushing through the legislation by this evening to prevent TDs being lobbied when they return to their constituencies at the weekend.
