Motorists warned to take care in cold snap
Motorists were warned to brace themselves for wintery road conditions as the weekend cold snap sets in.
Temperatures will plummet to between zero and minus 3C on Friday night, with widespread frost and icy patches on the road.
Snow showers are expected to affect north Connacht, Donegal and eastern counties of Leinster.
AA Roadwatch said road temperatures have already dropped below zero on the N11 Arklow Bypass but is averaging 3 degrees in most areas.
“It is set to be another very cold night with frost and ice forecast,” said a spokeswoman.
“Allow extra time for all journeys, reduce your speed and increase your braking distance.”
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) advised drivers to have their lights, tyres and spare wheel checked before the icy and snowy conditions hit and watch for black ice in sheltered and shaded areas on roads.
“If the road looks polished or glossy it could be black ice, one of winter’s worst hazards,” it said.
Motorists were also told to have a high visibility vest, tow rope, spare fuel and de-icing equipment in the boot of the car:
“In preparation for driving you should also ensure the vehicle is properly maintained, serviced and engine oil viscosity is suitable for cold conditions,” it added.
Elsewhere Britain is facing a 10-day wintry blast from the North Sea with temperatures plummeting as low as minus 6C.
