New Tesco brings over 250 jobs to Naas
Some 266 new jobs have been created with the opening of a new Tesco store in Naas, Co Kildare.
Officially opened today by Taoiseach Brian Cowen, the new store is part of Tesco Ireland’s €113m national investment plans which will create 748 new jobs across the country this year.
"Today’s opening is good news, creating 266 new jobs for Naas and representing a vote of confidence from Tesco in the Irish economy," Mr Cowen said.
"Tesco’s overall investment plans to create nearly 750 new jobs throughout the country are also extremely welcome at the present time.”
The company said it was forced to cap the number of applications for the 266 positions at 3,000 due to the overwhelming volume of demand.
Tesco Extra Naas will form part of a new shopping centre currently under construction and due for completion in the summer of next year.
This centre will include an additional 18 retail units and a café. It is envisaged that some 450 people in total will be employed at the new centre when fully operational.
Tesco now employs 930 people in Kildare with other stores located in Celbridge, Maynooth, Clane and Newbridge. The company has been trading for over 37 years in Naas. The existing store in Naas will continue to trade.
