Gardaí have named the man who died following an assault in Avoca, Co Wicklow last night as 48-year-old Brian Doyle.

Gardaí have named the man who died following an assault in Avoca, Co Wicklow last night as 48-year-old Brian Doyle.

Mr Doyle died following a row on the street outside Fitzgerald's pub in the town. It is understood he was punched during the course of an argument.

Gardaí were called to the pub sometime after 9pm last night after a woman who was driving by noticed a man on the ground outside.

This morning detectives appealed for people who were in the pub last night to come forward.

Gardaí said they have spoken to several people who were in the bar but say there are a number of others they are anxious to speak to.

Superintendent Pat Ward from Arklow Garda Station is leading the investigation.

A post mortem will be carried out later on man's body and a team from the garda technical bureau was this morning carrying out an examination of the scene.
