Safety campaign targets young motorists

Young motorists will be called on tonight to mark European Night Without Accident by taking extra care on the roads.

Several pubs and nightclubs across six counties in Meath, Donegal, Kildare, Mayo, Waterford and Carlow are involved in the road safety initiative, which is being held in 220 nightclubs across 27 European countries.

Designated drivers who wear a wristband to show they plan to stay alcohol-free for the night will be invited to be voluntarily breathalysed as they leave to see if the commitment was honoured.

Noel Brett, chief executive of the Road Safety Authority (RSA), said a high number of young people chose to abstain from drinking and driving last year, ensuring they and their friends get home safely.

“This year we are urging everyone planning a night out on the town to be equally responsible,” said Mr Brett.

“Don’t get behind the wheel of the car if you have been drinking. Look for an alternative mode of transport and remember, just one drink impairs driving.”

A total of 167 people have been killed on Irish roads so far this year.

Mr Brett added: “Let’s make sure that this weekend, and every weekend, is free from drink driving and free from collisions on our roads.”

This is the fourth year that Ireland has participated in the initiative, which was launched by the Responsible Young Drivers (RYD) in Belgium in 1995. It coincides with Irish Road Safety Week.

Fionnuala Sheehan, of campaign group drinkaware.ie, also warned motorists about driving the morning after a night on the town.

“The message is simple: it takes your body roughly one hour to rid itself of one standard drink,” said Ms Sheehan.

“Even if you have designated a driver on your night out this weekend, remember you may still be over the limit to drive the morning after.”
