Drugs firm to axe 55 jobs in Cork

Leading pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline is to lay-off 55 workers at its Cork plant, the company confirmed today.

The job cuts are on top of 66 other redundancies which the company is trying to agree in talks with trade unions.

Finbar Whyte, GSK vice-president in Cork, said: “This proposal is regrettable, however, it does represent the best strategic route for the Cork site and for GSK overall.”

GSK Cork is a manufacturing and new product introduction site, employing 370 workers making life-saving medicines. The company also has another 90 R&D staff not affected by these proposals.
