Latvian man charged in connection with €400,000 drugs find

A Latvian man charged in connection with an alleged drugs haul worth €400,000 was brought before Cork District Court today.

Detective Garda Fergal Long arrested Jurij Gudevic (aged 36) and charged him four counts under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Gudevic made no reply to the charges when he was cautioned by the arresting detective.

The Latvian national is accused of having cannabis resin at Silverdale Walk, Ballinlough, Cork on Tuesday, September 28, and having the cannabis for the purpose of sale or supply to others.

Similarly, he is charged with having cannabis resin and possessing the drug for sale or supply at his home at 5 Ashcroft apartments, Blackrock Road, Cork, on the same date.

It is understood that the Ballinlough charges related to an alleged quantity of one kilo of cannabis and that the Blackrock charges related to 59 kilos of the drug.

Donal Daly, solicitor, was appointed by Judge Con O’Leary to represent Gudevic on free legal aid.

When Judge O’Leary asked Inspector Mary King if there was a State objection to the accused being remanded on bail, Mr Daly interjected to say there was no defence application for bail yesterday.

Inspector King then applied to have the case adjourned to Wednesday October 6 at Cork District Court to allow time for directions to be obtained from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Judge O’Leary remanded the accused in custody until then.
