Investigation Unit to report on Malahide viaduct collapse to Oireachtas

Members of the Rail Accident Investigation Unit are due before the Oireachtas Transport Committee this morning to discuss the Malahide viaduct collapse.

A massive disaster was narrowly avoided in August last year when the stone viaduct collapsed into a river just moments after a passenger train had crossed over.

In its report into the incident published last month, the Rail Accident Investigation Unit

was critical of Iarnród Éireann's failure to notice problems in an inspection of the viaduct just three days before the collapse.

The inquiry also found that engineers were not properly trained for inspection duties at Iarnród Éireann.

It also confirmed that the collapse was mainly due to the erosion of a weir supporting the viaduct.

The Railway Safety Commission are due before the Oireachtas Transport Committee meeting later this morning.

The meeting will focus on the report's recommendations for improved safety and inspection regimes at Iarnród Éireann.
