Man charged with murder of father in Offaly

A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of a father of one in Co. Offaly yesterday.

28-year-old Derek McDonagh died after being stabbed during a row, involving up to ten people, which broke out at the Arden view estate in Tullamore yesterday morning.

22-year-old Richard Donovan with an address at the unofficial halting site, Kilcruttin, Tullamore appeared before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court this evening.

Detective Sergeant John Walsh said Donovan replied: "I’m sorry for what I done", when charged with the murder yesterday morning of Mr McDonagh at Arden View, Tullamore yesterday.

There was no application for bail and he was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday.

Despite a significant garda presence a number of people gathered around the courthouse and heckled Donovan as he was led away.

Father of one Derek McDonagh was stabbed outside his parents' home shortly before 11am yesterday.

His funeral will take place in the coming days.
