Adams 'optimistic' about ETA ceasefire

The President of Sinn Féin Gerry Adams has said he is optimistic about this weekend's announcement by ETA of a ceasefire.

The Basque separatist group in Northern Spain and Southern France declared an end to their terrorist campaign to establish an independent state in the region.

However, the Spanish Government has said the statement didn't go far enough.

It wants mention of the laying down of arms - a prerequisite the government has demanded - before it will enter negotiations.
