There are calls for the ESB to reverse plans to raise prices and instead slash them.

Sinn Féin is organising a protest outside the Dáil later to coincide with a meeting of the energy regulator, who wants to increase costs by5% from the start of October.

It recently emerged that 30 households every day have their supply cut off for failing to pay bills.

But Sinn Féin's spokesperson on social protection - Deputy Aengus O'Snodaigh - has said it is "unfair when customers are making a genuine effort".
