Rallies to take place in support of Mosney asylum-seekers

A number of demonstrations will take place around the country today in protest at the delays faced by asylum seekers.

Some 109 residents at Mosney in Co Meath have been told they must leave the centre today.

Last month, Mosney residents held three days of peaceful protests against their proposed transfer to Hatch Hall in Dublin. The Reception and Integration Agency (RIA) gave the asylum seekers a deadline of August 31 to leave.

The move is part of an overall plan to save €3m per year.

Many of the Mosney-based asylum seekers are still refusing to move, saying they are awaiting responses to appeals submitted to the RIA.

A number of protests will take place in several towns around the country later to highlight the issue and that of many others who face long delays in having their cases decided, and poor living conditions while they wait.
