HSE begins to trace hip-replacement patients after product recall
The HSE has started the process of identifying patients who received a hip replacement using a product which has now been recalled.
Around 3,500 Irish patients received the ASR Hip System produced by US-based firm DePuy Orthopaedics since it became available here in 2003.
HSE national lead in orthopaedics surgery Paddy Kenny said appointments would be sent to those who received the implant for a consultation, X-ray and probably a blood test.
"Only a small percentage of the 3,500 will need any further surgery," he added.
