Former Foreign Affairs minister Dooge dies

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs James Dooge has died.

The 88-year-old was an advisor to former Fine Gael Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald, who appointed him to his Cabinet in 1981.

During his career, Professor Dooge was also Leader of the Seanad, President of the International Council for Science, President of the Royal Irish Academy and Chairman of the Irish Film Board.

He also chaired the Dooge Committee, which drew up a report on institutional reforms for the European Council during the Irish Presidency of the EC in 1984.
