Senator concerned about inclusion in Seanad investigation

Senator Ronán Mullen has written to the chairman of the Select Committee on Members Interests to express his 'extreme concern' about being included in an investigation by the Seanad group.

Last night the Committee included Senator Mullen on a list of four Senators to be investigated - among them Ssenator Ivor Callely.

Senator Mullen is the subject of a complaint by the People Before Profit Alliance who want him to reveal the name of an elected representative who suggested he inflate his expenses.

Senator Mullen said he was horrified at being included in the investigation when he was just trying to highlight the lax culture of politicians' expenses.

"I reported the comment because it was an appropriate comment on the past attitude to expenses," he said.

He however said that he was unsure if the person that made the comment to him was serious, and said he was not prepared to "go pointing the finger at somebody" when he could not be sure if what they intended was wrong.
