Committee brings forward Callely expenses meeting

The Seanad Committee investigating Senator Ivor Callely's expenses is bringing forward its next meeting to next Monday.

The Seanad Committee investigating Senator Ivor Callely's expenses is bringing forward its next meeting to next Monday.

The group had been scheduled to meet on August 31.

The Committee on Members' Interests will also use the meeting to consider complaints against senators Gerry Butler and Ann Ormond.

There is now speculation that Senator Callely has fled the country as he resists calls to comment on or explain latest expenses claims, despite being suspended from Fianna Fáil and reported to Gardaí.

Green Party Chairman, Senator Dan Boyle, thinks Senator Callely should resign.

"For his own position, for the position he is putting the Seanad in, and politics in general, I think the situation would be best served if he did resign," Senator Boyle said.
