Residents return home after Belfast security alert

Up to 100 residents have returned to their homes following a security alert in West Belfast overnight.

A British Army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on a car that was abandoned outside a PSNI station in New Barnsley as a precaution.

Police say, however, they found no evidence of any security device.

Yesterday a booby trap bomb was found under a soldier’s car in Bangor, Co Down.

British Army bomb disposal officers carried out a series of controlled explosions on the device outside the home in the seaside town’s Chatsworth area.

And members of the public narrowly escaped injury on Tuesday morning when a car bomb exploded outside a police station in Derry.

A taxi driver had been hijacked in the city and forced to drive his car to the station after a device containing 200lbs of homemade explosive was loaded on board.

Politicians and police have condemned the incidents.
