The badly decomposed remains of a man have been discovered in County Monaghan.

The body was found by a team searching for Charlie Armstrong - who went missing from the Crossmaglen area of Co. Armagh in 1981.

It is thought he was murdered by the provisional IRA, possibly after stumbling upon an IRA operation.

The partial remains have yet to be formally identified.

In a statement tonight, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams appealed to anyone with any information that might help other families locate their loved ones to come forward.

He also said if the remains are formally identified as that of Charlie Armstrong, it will come as a huge relief to his family who never gave up hope of finding him.
