Burst pipe cuts off water to thousands of Cork homes

Thousands of households in Cork city are without water this morning, due to a burst pipe at Inniscarra dam.

Millions of gallons of water were released when a 1.5 metre pipe connected to the Inniscarra dam burst at about 7pm yesterday.

The water shortage is affecting residents in Ballincollig Town, Carrigrohane, Ballinora, Waterfall, Curraheen, Bandon Road and Bishopstown.

Cork County Council has described the incident as "very serious". The council is examining which smaller reservoirs will be able to cover the affected areas.

The extent of the damage is currently being assessed and a major repair plan is being put in place which could the rest of the day at least.

All consumers, including those in areas not affected by the break, are advised to use water sparingly until normal supply is restored.
