The Dáil's Public Accounts Committee is to scrutinise documents concerning the decision to guarantee the country's banks in September 2008.

The Committee will meet in private session tomorrow but has put the Department of Finance on standby in the event that it decides to call witnesses.

PAC chairman, Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen, said in a statement this evening that the Committee intends to "carefully pore over" the documents, which it has now received after a nine-week delay, to establish if the decision to guarantee the banks was in the best interest of taxpayers.
