Airport passenger numbers fall 14%

More than 230,000 passengers are set to pass through Dublin Airport this bank holiday weekend – down 14% on last year.

Around 1,800 flights will touch down and take off from Friday to Monday, with more than 100 chartered to sunspots such as Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey.

Passengers are being advised to arrive at least 90 minutes before their departure time to beat the queues.

The airport is also asking people to double check EU security regulations on carrying liquids before travelling.

Meanwhile, road safety chiefs have urged drivers to take extra care over the busy holiday weekend.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said road users should remember the basics during the traditionally high risk period.

“I’m asking drivers to slow down, never drink and drive, or drive while tired and always wear a seatbelt,” he said.

“In particular I would appeal to motorcyclists to wear proper personal protection equipment and wear high visibility jackets.

“Given the increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities, to date this year, I would also urge walkers to wear reflective jackets too.

“If we all make a small effort we can make the roads a safer place this weekend.”
