EU hears petition against cuts in Irish Equality Authority funds

MEPs in Brussels have been hearing a petition against the cut made to the Irish Equality Authority’s budget in 2008.

Campaigners say the Irish Government slashed its funding by 43% from €5.8 to €3.3m.

They argue that it has undermined the body’s ability to do its job.

MEP Marian Harkin says the petition is about making sure EU equality legislation is implemented in Ireland.
