New TUI president elected

Bernie Ruane has been elected as the new president of the Teacher's Union of Ireland (TUI).

Ms Ruane is the first ever woman President of TUI from second level. She was the outgoing Vice President for the past two years and before that had represented the Community and Comprehensive schools area for the counties Carlow, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford on the Executive Committee since 2004.

A native of Ennis, Ms Ruane works in Shannon Comprehensive School as a teacher of French and English.

She takes up her position as TUI President on July 1.
