Taoiseach leads tributes to Senator
The Taoiseach has led tributes to Senator Kieran Phelan who died suddenly this morning.
The 61-year-old father of five suffered a suspected heart attack in a city centre hotel as he prepared to go to the Seanad.
Brian Cowen said he was saddened by the passing of his friend and Fianna Fáil colleague.
“Kieran is a well known, much admired and greatly respected member of Seanad Eireann,” said Mr Cowen.
“He is a constituency colleague of mine and a lifelong friend. I will miss him deeply.”
Mr Cowen extended his deepest sympathies to Mr Phelan’s wife Mary and their five children Fiona, Martina, Brenda, Aisling and Patrick.
The Senator was said to be a hugely committed member of Fianna Fáil who served on Laois County Council from 1991-2003 before he was elected to Seanad Eireann in 2002 and re-elected in 2007.
The Taoiseach described Mr Phelan was an unassuming gentleman.
“He was kind, he was easy-going, he was dependable and he was loyal to his friends,” continued Mr Cowen.
“He had a real ability to relate to people and had a keen political sense. He had a strong sense of humour and a strong work ethic.
“Kieran Phelan leaves behind a legacy of hard work and a strong commitment to public service.”
Mr Cowen said his passing will be mourned right across political life.
“Kieran is a great loss to public service, to his community and to his many, many friends,” added Mr Cowen.
“Kieran’s loss will be felt most keenly by those who knew him best and loved him most.”
Independent TD Finian McGrath said the whole Dáil and Seanad are devastated by the sudden death.
“He was extremely popular around the house and loved by all parties and Independents,” said Mr McGrath.
“He was warm, friendly and a very decent man. Once again my deepest sympathy to his wife, Mary and their children, family and friends.”
