Three people were being questioned today over a gang-related gun attack which left a young man fighting for his life.

The 20-year-old was shot at close range by a lone gunman as he sat in a car in St John’s Square in Limerick city at about 9.30pm yesterday.

The victim, who is thought to have been wounded in the head during the incident, was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

He was later transferred to Cork University Hospital, where his condition was described as critical.

A number of other people who were in the car escaped uninjured.

They can be held for up to seven days at Henry Street and Roxboro Road Garda stations under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.
