Some flights grounded by ash cloud, but Irish airspace still open

Ash from the still-erupting Icelandic volcano has caused further turmoil for passengers today as Aer Lingus and Ryanair have been forced to cancel a number of flights.

Some transatlantic flights, as well as certain services to Iberia have been grounded.

The Irish Aviation Authority said Irish airports will remain open until at least 6am tomorrow morning and the situation is being constantly monitored.

Renewed activity in the Eyjafjallajokull volcano sent ash up to heights of 20,000ft to 30,000ft earlier this week, weather forecasters said.

"The volcanic ash cloud has now taken a crescent shape around Ireland and any change to the prevailing weather conditions could bring the concentrated ash back over the country," the IAA said.

A further update will be issued at 8.30pm.

Ryanair spokesperson Stephen McNamara said all passengers should check flight details online before heading to the airport.
