The Government's energy watchdog is expected to today set parameters around how and when the ESB will be allowed to reduce its prices, allowing it to compete with other energy providers.

The Commission for Energy Regulation has historically set prices for the ESB, to encourage competitors into the market offering lower prices than the state company.
