Ten rescued from Newry blaze
Ten people were rescued from an overnight fire in an apartment block in Newry.
Five of those led to safety by firefighters had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The blaze broke out just before 3am in a bookmaker’s shop on the ground floor of the building in the city’s Corn Market.
The fire service said smoke alarms were fitted in the four-storey block but failed to operate.
A total of 16 people live in the building. Six had managed to get out before firefighters arrived.
