Doctors claim it may be necessary to close A&E departments at a number of the country's hospitals because of staffing difficulties brought about by cutbacks.

The Irish Association for Emergency Medicine said the problem is most acute in Naas General in Kildare, Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, Mayo General Hospital, Kerry General Hospital and Letterkenny General Hospital.
