Judge gives Hayes life for murder of Cork widow

Oliver Hayes has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Cork widow Ann Corcoran.

Mr Justice Paul Carney also sentenced the 46-year-old, part-time painter to ten years in jail on separate charges of false imprisonment and theft, to run concurrently with his life sentence.

Ann Corcoran's nephew Kevin Kelly told the court that the "terrible crime" had changed the lives of their family forever.

The 60-year-old widow was beaten to death by Oliver Hayes after he abducted and robbed her in west Cork in January 2009.
