Customs seize 1.6 million illegal cigarettes

Customs officers have seized 1.6 million counterfeit cigarettes and 325 bottles of vodka in Co. Louth.

The seizure has an estimated value of €720,000 with a potential loss to the exchequer of €603,000.

One individual has been questioned and investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday 300,000 illegally imported cigarettes and two vehicles were detained by Revenue's Customs Service in Co. Cavan.

The seizure is believed to be worth around €200,000 with a potential loss to the exchequer of €114,000.

Two people were questioned and a file is being prepared for prosecution.
