Search for missing fisherman continues
A major search operation was continuing today for a fisherman lost overboard from an Irish vessel.
The man in this 30s, believed to be a foreign nationatl, fell off the Janireh at about 2am last night.
The vessel was around 11 miles southwest of the Fastnet Lighthouse off Co Cork when the mayday call was lodged.
The Navy’s LE Emer ship is co-ordinating the search operation with help from two RNLI lifeboats, a local fishing trawler and a Coast Guard helicopter.
Navy Lt Commander Terry Ward said sea conditions had been good overnight and visibility was clear.
“While we continue to search we remain hopeful,” he said. “But obviously as time goes on hopes will begin to fade.”
