The remains of the man were found by a farmer near Cratloe in Co Clare.

Gardaí in Limerick are investigating whether the body is that of a man who was reported missing last November.

The grim discovery was made by a farmer at about 4pm yesterday.

The body of the man - found on the banks of the Shannon at Portrine - is thought to have been in the water for some time.

A postmortem examination on the body will be carried out at the Midwestern Regional Hospital to determine the cause of death.
