Gardaí from Limerick have been called in to investigate the discovery of a man's body in Co. Clare.

The remains of the man - aged in his late 40s or early 50s - were found by a local farmer washed up on the banks of the River Shannon at Portrine, near Cratloe, at around 3.30pm this afternoon.

The body is thought to have been in the water for some time.

Its believed he may have suffered a violent death and the state pathologist's office has been called in.

A full post mortem will be carried out at the Mid-Western regional hospital in Limerick.

The body has yet to be positively identified but it is understood gardaí believe the man may have been reported missing in recent weeks
