Limerick and Wicklow make litter blacklist

Limerick city and Wicklow town have been designated litter blackspots according to the 2009 Irish Businesses Against Litter League.

They are the only two blackspots in the country.

IBAL said Ireland's main cities are getting dirtier despite the fact that the country is cleaner overall.

Two-thirds of 60 towns surveyed are classed as litter-free.

However, the majority of cities are "littered".

Some cities have dropped in their rankings since last year with Galway city dropping from a litter free classification.

IBAL says we need to rethink how our litter laws are being enforced on businesses in these areas.

The cleanest town in the country will be announced later today.

The shortlist includes Bray, Cavan, Clonmel, Drogheda and Longford.
