President extends New Year wishes
President Mary McAleese is extending best wishes for the new year.
President McAleese has described 2009 as a year that has tested the country but saw the kind and caring character of the Irish people shine through.
The President says community spirit has triumphed despite huge difficulty in the economy; with flooding and with major job losses.
"The economic shocks of 2009 brought job loss and money worries to a lot of homes," she said.
"Historically high numbers of people have turned for help to community-based organisations and charities.
"But we have seen the character and resilience of our people express itself in the huge increase in volunteering that is reported by community organisations, and in the response from the public to please for financial aid from those in need."
