Dublin ceremony to show solidarity with those hit by recession
People are being urged to come out today in support of those struggling to cope this Christmas in the wake of job losses or a change in economic fortunes.
A candle-lighting ceremony, led by the European Volunteer of the Year Christine Buckley, will take place on Merrion Square in Dublin city centre this afternoon.
Organiser Paula Madigan said the ceremony is simply a show of solidarity for people hit by the economic crisis.
She said many people have friends and family affected by job losses and they are keen to help:
"We have got such a postive response back," she said. "Loads of people have been affected by this and lots of people have shown support."
Ms Madigan said anyone unable to make it to Dublin for the ceremony can also show their support by lighting a candle in their home at 4.15pm.
