Pro-Life campaign calls for laws protecting human embryos

The Pro Life campaign has said legislation to protect human embryos is "urgently required".

The Supreme Court today ruled the Constitution does not afford protection to embyros prior to implantation.

The court rejected an appeal from 43-year-old Mary Roche to have three frozen embryos implanted against the wishes of her estranged husband.

Pro-Life Professor William Binchy said he is disappointed by the ruling and is calling on the Government to draw up the necessary legislation to protect embryos.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the Government will take legal advice on the implications of today's Supreme Court judgement.

Mr Cowen also appealed to the Opposition to work with the Government to draft any legislation which might be needed to address some of the questions raised in today's case.
