Teachers' unions meet to discuss strike options

The executives of the country's teachers' unions are meeting today to decide whether or not to take industrial action in the new year.

Teachers will consider a range of options from a work-to-rule to all-out industrial action in response to the pay cuts announced in the Budget.

Unions have ruled out talks with the Government after meetings broke down last week.

Sheila Noonan of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation said their members are determined to take action.

She said the teachers' unions as well as other public sector unions were seeking to "regroup and reorganise" in order to consider how best to use their mandate on industrial action in the coming year.
