Police question four after 'gangland' murder

Four men were being questioned today after a man was shot dead in a suspected gangland attack.

The man in his mid 20s was gunned down at about 9.30pm yesterday in the Ballysimon area of Limerick city.

It is understood he was shot a number of times.

The four arrested men were detained in the Roxboro area of the city shortly after the attack by murder squad detectives.

Senior garda sources linked the killing to ongoing gangland feuds in Limerick.

The scene, on the main Tipperary road out of the city, was sealed off and a technical examination was taking place today.

The State Pathologist’s Office has also been notified.

The victim is believed to have been the 22nd person to die in a gun murder this year.

Gun crime in Limerick has fallen by more than two thirds since 2007.
