Flood victims advised to disinfect homes and businesses

Householders and businesses hit by flooding are being advised to clear away debris as soon as possible to avoid possible bacteria and rodent infestations.

Rentokil Ireland says it is critical that properties are fully disinfected once flood waters subside to tackle unseen hazards.

The company says floods may make it easier for vermin to gain access to buildings and that, as they are forced from their natural habitat, they will migrate into areas which provide food and shelter.

In Limerick, the County Council advised a number of people to evacuate their homes overnight after the ESB released more water than usual at Parteen Weir to allieviate pressure at Ardnacrusha.

A spokesperson said there was no further increase in water levels overnight but it will continue to monitor the situation today.

Army personel have been drafted in to deliver sandbags and help relief efforts, with more bad weather forecast for today.

In Clare, flood waters are slowly receeding in Ennis.
