Hanafin indicates support for prescription charge

Another Government minister has today claimed that a 50c prescription charge for medical card holders is not excessive.

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin said that the charge was low and would not discourage people from getting necessary medications.

"The idea of introducing a prescription charge which is as low as 50c per item shouldn’t in any way be a deterrent to people to get the medicine they need," said Hanafin.

The Health Minister signalled at the weekend that the charge may form part of her department's Budget plans.

Although the Taoiseach stressed earlier that it was just one of a number of items being considered, the Environment Minister and Green Party leader said he believed 50c was "relatively modest ".
