Overnight heavy rain was causing problems for motorists in areas across the country this morning, with some roads impassable due to surface water.

Overnight heavy rain was causing problems for motorists in areas across the country this morning, with some roads impassable due to surface water.

Flooding was reported on the Borris/New Ross road in Kilkenny, the Dunmanway/Macroom road in Cork and the N81 in between Blessington in Co Wicklow and Rathvilly in Co Carlow.

AA Roadwatch also reported problems on the N25 New Ross/Waterford Rd, with the Gorey/Ballycanew Rd (R741) closed at Ballykale Cross.

Other counties affected included Laois and Roscommon.

This afternoon's race card at Cork was called off due to waterlogging.
